WICKED

Written by Music & Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, Book by Winnie Holzman, based on the novel by Gregory Maguire.
Directed by: Joe Mantello

Synopsis: Long before Dorothy dropped in, two other girls meet in the Land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two unlikely friends end up as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch makes for the most spellbinding new musical in years.

NEW YORK TIMES:
"Wicked," the Technicolorized sermon of a musical that opened last night at the Gershwin Theater. Playing Glinda the Good Witch in this equally arch and earnest show, a revisionist look at "The Wizard of Oz," Ms. Chenoweth must put across jokes and sight gags that could make angels fall."

USA TODAY:
"It's too soon to tell whether Schwartz's score for Wicked (***½ out of four), which opened Thursday at the Gershwin Theatre, will prove as enduring. But it's safe to say that this is the most complete, and completely satisfying, new musical I've come across in a long time."

NY1:
"“Wizard of Oz” fans will be fascinated by all the back stories, answering such questions as “Is Glinda really that good?” and “Where did the flying monkeys come from?” But the best thing about "Wicked" is its stars, whose talents cast a powerful spell. If only the rest of the show had half their magic. "

NEW YORK POST:
"WICKED IS A SPECTACULAR SPECTACLE! Emerald City never had it so good."

TIME:
"WICKED works because it has something Broadway musicals, so addicted to facetiousness and camp, have largely given up on: a story that adults can take seriously. "

USA TODAY:
"Remember the last time an original Broadway musical made you laugh, cry and think -- in the right places and for the right reasons? WICKED IS THE MOST COMPLETE, AND COMPLETELY SATISFYING, NEW MUSICAL I'VE COME ACROSS IN A LONG TIME. "
